Helpful Tips
Installing Your Sod:
Sod must be installed the SAME DAY it is delivered during the hot summer months. During spring and fall when temperatures are cooler, it is possible to allow 24 hrs. after delivery to complete installation.
Start with a straight line like your driveway, house or sidewalk. Stagger each piece of sod like brickwork. Make sure the ends fit together, but DO NOT OVERLAP.

Watering Your New Lawn :
Your new lawn relies on sprinkling for water until the roots are firmly knitted in the top 3" of soil. For the first 2-4 weeks, keep the sod moist at all times. Once the sod is firmly knit into the soil, you can revert to a regular watering schedule. How often your lawn needs to be watered can only be determined by your specific conditions. All lawns require regular watering during hot summer months and less water during spring and fall. Most professionals recommend between 11/2" to 2" of water per week during hot summer weather. Be sure sprinkler coverage is complete and all areas are receiving equal amount of water. Adjust sprinklers accordingly. If you begin to see discoloration in some areas after sod installation, your sprinklers are probably not providing complete or even water. Adjust them ASAP and provide additional water to discolored areas. Watering in the early A.M. is recommended.
Be sure to read and follow the watering instructions that are provided with every sod purchase.
How do I determine the square footage I will need?
A simple way to calculate the square footage is to measure and then multiply the length by width. Next subtract areas such as flower beds, patios, decks, sidewalks etc. using the same calculations to determine square footage of these areas.

When is the best time to install sod ?
Sodding can be done very successfully anytime during the year when the ground is not frozen or snow covered.
Most landscape professionals begin work, including sod, early in March or as soon as weather permits. Early spring installations are always successful and require less water then later in the season when weather turns hot.
During hot, dry, summer installations, we recommend the customer have an automatic sprinkler system to insure success. Small jobs, however, can be watered with manual sprinklers if the customer is committed
to daily watering for at 2 to 3 weeks.
The fall is always an ideal time for planting sod as well as most other landscape material. The later in the fall, the less water that is required due to the cooler temperature and adequate rainfall. Sod is typically harvested and installed thru mid December.

Mowing:
As a general rule ( during the active growing season ) your new lawn should be mowed between 10 days and 2 weeks after installation. Avoid mowing immediately after watering or rain. The ideal cutting height should be maintained between 2 1/2" to 3" . Be sure the mower blades are sharp and the mulching of clippings is encouraged whenever possible.

Fertilizer & Lime
Before installation of the sod, it is recommended that starter fertilizer similar to 10-10-10 or 10-6-4 be applied to the soil at the rate of 20-25 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft.
Lime is also recommended and in the absence of a ph soil test should be applied at the rate of between 40-50 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft.  After the application of both the lime and fertilizer, they should be raked lightly into the upper layer of top soil. To insure the continued high quality of your new lawn, it is recommended that you follow a recommended maintenance program of at least 4 light applications of a plant food, timed throughout the full growing season.
